Manufacturing technology and contracted vehicles
Hitachi Rail opened its $100 million factory in Hagerstown on 8 September 2025. The company announcement gives an area of 307,000 square feet and more than $30 million in digital investment. GlobalLogic and Hitachi Digital Services support automated manufacturing and supply-chain monitoring. The site uses three-dimensional printing for spare parts and tooling.
- Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority: 256 railcars.
- Maryland Transit Administration in Baltimore: 78 railcars.
- Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority: 200 railcars.
These three named orders total 534 vehicles.
Opening ceremony and state announcement
The Maryland governor’s office release of 8 September identifies Lieutenant Governor Aruna K. Miller among the opening participants. It describes an immersive customer experience centre using artificial intelligence to demonstrate Hitachi products and respond to visitors. The factory’s energy-management arrangements include monitoring electricity and water consumption through the H-Vision analytics system.
The state release rounds the factory’s area to 300,000 square feet and associates the investment with more than 500 advanced-manufacturing roles and approximately 1,300 local jobs overall. Those employment descriptions have different boundaries from a count of workers already on the production line.
