Kohler opened its Casa Grande, Arizona, manufacturing complex to produce Sterling bath and shower fixtures. Manufacturing Dive reported on 22 May 2024 that the estimated $300 million project combines manufacturing with warehousing, distribution, offices, cafeterias and a showroom. The complex covers about one million square feet on a 216-acre site.

Products, employment and the opening

The plant makes baths, shower receptors and surrounding walls. Manufacturing Dive also identified production of Vikrell, Kohler’s material comprising resins, fibreglass and filler.

Kohler’s release dated 15 May describes more than 400 full-time administrative and production positions. Its photograph caption dates the ribbon-cutting to 14 May. Governor Katie Hobbs and state and local officials attended; Kitchen & Bath North America president Norbert Schmidt said the additional capacity would support Sterling’s growth and deliveries.

The proposed energy equipment

A separate company announcement dated 27 March detailed the proposed electric-boiler and microgrid project. The Department of Energy had selected Kohler for award negotiations covering up to $51.2 million, to be matched by company investment. This was a selection for negotiations, rather than a statement that all funding had been paid or equipment commissioned.

  • A solar-array microgrid rated at 21 MW.
  • Long-duration batteries storing 68 MWh.
  • Industrial backup generators rated at 12 MW and capable of using HVO fuel.

The March account assigned engineering, procurement and construction to Clarke Energy, microgrid controls to Heila Technologies and generator supply to Kohler Power Systems.
