Foundation construction for an electronics factory expansion
Foundation construction for an electronics factory expansion

Hotayi Electronic began the third phase of its smart-factory expansion in Batu Kawan, Penang, with a groundbreaking ceremony reported on 21 March 2025. The joint announcement describes an RM500 million project, a planned 380,000-square-foot facility and an expected 1,000 skilled jobs.

A construction milestone

Bernama’s coverage identifies the event as the start of construction activity, not the opening of a completed factory. The floor area and employment figure describe the proposed expansion. The announcement does not establish that the full building was operating or that all the expected jobs had already been filled.

Hotayi chief executive Goh Guek Eng said the project was intended to improve quality, efficiency, innovation and sustainability while supporting customers’ changing needs. These are the company’s stated objectives for the investment, rather than independently verified operating gains.

Features planned for the expansion

  • RM500 million investment associated with the third-phase project.
  • A planned facility area of 380,000 square feet.
  • An expected 1,000 new skilled jobs.
  • Advanced automation, artificial-intelligence analytics and connected production processes.

The announcement describes Internet of Things technology as part of the design for the manufacturing operation. It does not specify individual equipment suppliers, a commissioning schedule or quantified savings from those systems. The technology description is therefore retained as part of the project plan.

Local manufacturing and customer support

The company has operated in Malaysia’s electronics industry since 1992, according to the report. Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow attended the groundbreaking and spoke about Hotayi’s continuing investment in the state. MIDA also linked the expansion to industrial development and skilled employment.

Those institutional comments provide the setting for the announcement. They do not establish orders from named customers or the precise utilisation level of the future facility. The report gives no annual production volume or date on which all planned capabilities would become available.

The company file therefore records the investment plan and construction milestone with their original status intact. Customers and suppliers can use the company’s contact channel to ask about the relevant service scope or project timetable, rather than treat an anticipated capability as an already completed delivery commitment.
