Export-oriented and domestic-oriented industries

The Department of Statistics media statement reports 7.2% annual sales growth in export-oriented industries, which accounted for 70.2% of total manufacturing sales. Computer, electronics and optical products grew 17.9%; vegetable and animal oils and fats increased 13.0%. Export-oriented sales rose 0.2% from December.

Domestic-oriented industries recorded annual growth of 6.9% and monthly growth of 1.0%. Their food-processing sales grew 11.6%, while basic metals and fabricated metal products each increased 5.9%. The classification concerns industries’ orientation, rather than identifying the destination of every sale in the RM169.4 billion total.

The size of the monthly change

This editorial calculation uses unadjusted displayed values.

The separate official manufacturing performance report gives a seasonally adjusted monthly increase of 2.9%. That differs from the unadjusted 0.5% comparison because the series removes recurring seasonal patterns. The report marks January data as provisional.

Industry mix and sales scale

Applying the published 70.2% export-oriented share to the rounded total gives approximately RM118.919 billion, leaving RM50.481 billion for the remaining 29.8%. These calculated amounts indicate the relative scale of the two industry groups; they are not separate export-shipment values or official unrounded subtotals.
