New Balance completed a $65 million expansion of its Skowhegan, Maine, footwear factory, Manufacturing Dive reported on 26 September 2025. The Central Maine operation employed 400 people making the brand’s premium Made in USA footwear. The report distinguished the completed addition from renovation work still taking place inside the existing building.

The new space and employment target

Senator Susan Collins’s 22 September opening announcement describes a 120,000-square-foot single-storey addition to the five-storey factory purchased by New Balance in 1981. Another 20,000 square feet of the existing building was being renovated. The announcement gives a target of 200 new jobs and says the project would double production capacity.

  • New addition: 120,000 square feet.
  • Existing-building renovation: 20,000 square feet.
  • Reported opening investment: $65 million.

Federal, state and local officials joined hundreds of employees for the opening. Collins toured the new space and addressed the gathering.

From the 2023 groundbreaking to the 2025 opening

The senator’s groundbreaking statement dated 5 June 2023 had already set out the same $65 million investment, 120,000-square-foot addition and 200-job target. It said manufacturing would continue during construction and projected completion by the end of 2024.

The opening ceremony recorded in September 2025 therefore occurred after the original announced end-2024 completion target. The two dated announcements do not explain the difference in timing or establish when every construction task finished. The September report still identifies a separate renovation as ongoing.

The scale of the building work

The two identified work areas total 140,000 square feet, calculated as 120,000 plus 20,000.
