Metal additive manufacturing parts beside production equipment

Nikon opened its Advanced Manufacturing Technology Center in Long Beach, California, Manufacturing Dive reported on 8 August 2024. The facility is operational and serves aviation, aerospace and defence customers. Its opening forms part of Nikon’s plan to expand digital manufacturing.

Metal printing, research and measurement

The 29 July company announcement describes a 90,000-square-foot facility at 3550 Carson Street. It combines design for additive manufacturing, engineering, prototyping and production with metallurgy and metrology capabilities.

  • Large and ultra-large laser powder bed fusion tools from Nikon SLM Solutions.
  • Nikon directed energy deposition equipment.
  • Research on Nikon technologies and next-generation manufacturing systems.

Nikon AM Synergy occupies the centre; Nikon SLM Solutions Studios were still described as upcoming. The announcement therefore distinguishes an operating site from an additional studio component planned within it.

Reorganisation of Morf3D

In its 10 July restructuring announcement, Nikon renamed Morf3D as Nikon AM Synergy following full acquisition in July 2023. It changed leadership and redirected the former general-purpose contract-manufacturing business towards metal additive manufacturing for defence and aerospace.

The restructuring included closure of the El Segundo location and disposal of non-essential equipment. The renamed business was operating from Long Beach, combining Nikon SLM laser powder bed fusion and internally developed directed energy deposition with measurement and materials capabilities. The centre thus brought together a reorganised subsidiary and technologies from different parts of the group.

The manufacturing unit established in 2023

Nikon’s 26 April 2023 formation notice announced a California-based global headquarters for the advanced-manufacturing business, with operations due to begin in July. It named Hamid Zarringhalam chief executive and Yuichi Shibazaki co-chief executive, stated capital of $25 million, and identified Nikon Americas as the 100% shareholder.

The notice assigned the new company responsibility for scaling and managing additive-manufacturing assets, while SLM and Morf3D would continue supporting their own customers’ programmes. The $25 million formation capital is a corporate figure from 2023, not a disclosed construction cost for the Long Beach centre.
